When Rome was founded, the peninsula of Italy was home to four major tribes – Etruscans, Latins, Sabines and Samnites. At its height, the Roman Empire comprised of over 50 million people. Anyone living outside of this empire was considered a barbarian and, therefore, conquerable. Students will be “conquered barbarians” being schooled in Roman culture, tradition and empirical pride. What is their teacher’s ultimate motive? To undermine the development of the empire by rising up a new devoted army or to weed out potential traitors of the newly expanded empire? Only a debate in the end will show the true motive. Be careful for which side you support; secret elimination is a Roman practice. Some in class note-taking encouraged. Homework will include preparation for debate. In class, hands-on activities include group projects and review games.
